Geraniums - Give These Heirlooms a Second Glance!
By Mary Townsley
What's not to like about Geraniums, annuals that sport bright sassy flowers from spring until hard freeze? Geraniums commonly available in our garden centers are actually Pelargoniums, a confusion resulting from botanists' disagreements back in the late 1700s! Regardless of the name, zonal geraniums do well in full sun, either in pots or in planting beds. The ivy leaf geraniums prefer more moderate temps, so afternoon shade is helpful. Geraniums are heavy feeders and flower best when deadheaded regularly. While butterflies are frequent visitors, red geraniums in particular may also attract hummingbirds.
