Plant of the Month: Artichokes

Writer's picture: Jennifer McDonaldJennifer McDonald

Artichokes are in the thistle family. Those grown in the US largely come from California, but they thrive in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 7 and higher.  Give them a try in Mobile!

Start artichoke seeds 12 weeks before you intend to plant them—best planted from October to early November.  Because artichokes start small but grow into big plants, plant them at least 3 feet apart.  They like well-drained soil and full sun at least 6 hours a day.  Recommended varieties: Green Globe, Imperial Star, Emerald (thornless), Romanesco (purple buds).
