December Plant of the Month: Muhly Grass, Muhlenbergia capillaris

Muhly grass by Judy Weaver.

By Barbara Boone

Muhly grass, Muhlenbergia capillaris, is the superstar of ornamental grasses! It puts on an appealing show with little maintenance required. This grass is found in southern locales, along highways, and more and more in home and commercial landscapes. Muhly grass is an easy to grow ornamental grass that grows in clumps that can reach 2 to 3 feet tall and up to 3 feet wide at maturity. Plant in full sun about 36 inches apart for best growth. Water new plants until they are established. Afterwards muhly grass is drought tolerant. Cut plants back in winter and fertilize in spring.

Fall is the season where this grass produces pink cloud-like stalks and shows us its superstar status. A white variety also exists, but pink is more popular.
